China CoatedSteel Export Update, September 2026: Productmix Shift, Emergingmarket Demand and Q4 Outlook

China’s coated steel exports (PPGI, PPGL, GI galvanized coils) show obvious productmix differentiation entering September 2026. Customs statistics indicate August coatedsheet exports stood at 772 000 tons; JanuaryAugust cumulative shipments reached 5.91 million tons, up 2.7% yearonyear. Among them, ordinary hotdip galvanized GI maintained stable volume for lowend roofing applications, while PPGL galvalume and highdurability PPGI recorded doubledigit yearonyear growth. Driven by prefabricated building, coldstorage warehouse and photovoltaic enclosure projects across South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Africa, demand for thingauge hightensile colourcoated coils keeps expanding. Customspec orders including mattfinish, special RAL colours, JIS / ASTM certified coils account for an increasing share of total export enquiries, whereas lowmargin generalpurpose GI faces intensified competition from Korean, Turkish and Indian mill products.

Traderemedy risks keep rising for Chinese coated steel during Augustearly September, reshaping global sourcing patterns. South Africa’s existing antidumping duties on flat steel continue to restrict direct access to Southern African Customs Union markets, pushing some cargo to reroute toward West and East African destinations. Egypt’s safeguard measures on imported flat products remain effective, creating higher cost barriers for ordinary galvanized material. In Oceania, Australia’s ongoing antidumping investigation targeting colourcoated products adds uncertainty for mill exporters. Highend specialty grades such as PVDF / HDP highweatherresistance PPGL are largely exempted from major traderemedy impacts. As market access becomes harder in highincome economies, South Asia, MiddleEast and EastAfrican markets now absorb more than 62% of China’s total coatedsteel export volume; local rollformers, roofing manufacturers and sandwichpanel factories represent the core buyer group.

On pricing, Chinese FOB offers retain solid cost competitiveness for coated steel grades. Septembershipment standard PEfinish PPGI FOB China port quotes fluctuate within USD 715740 per ton for conventional specs. Even after adding logistics costs, Chinese products maintain obvious price advantages versus POSCO, Union Steel and Hyundai steel from South Korea, whose premium ranges stay USD 5595 per ton depending on technical requirements and coilweight restrictions. Domestic rawmaterial costs move in a narrow band. Realestatelinked consumption stays muted, social inventories of galvanized substrate remain at mediumhigh levels, limiting sharp upward price movement. Overseas downstream fabricators persist with justintime purchasing, avoiding large stock buildups. Major domestic mills make only marginal monthly adjustments on exfactory prices for GI, PPGI and PPGL.

Weekly export monitoring demonstrates steady shipment performance amid external headwinds. August 2531 coatedsteel export departures hit 197 400 tons, rising 6.4% weekonweek, marking two consecutive weekly increases. Nevertheless, global purchasing sentiment remains mixed. Local capacity expansion in Southeast Asia and the MiddleEast increases regional supply and partially diverts import demand. Global construction PMI neworder subindex stays near 50point threshold, reflecting restrained overseas construction activity. Supported by cost advantages and diversified destination layout, coatedsteel exports avoid sharp contraction.

Looking toward Q4 2026, September will receive partial support from preseason stocking in South Asia and EastAfrica before local rainy seasons arrive. However, the fourthquarter traditional offseason for overseas construction is approaching. Exportoriented coatedsteel producers will face pressure from order slowdown and potential inventory buildup. Industry consensus points to two key development directions for Chinese coatedsteel exporters. First, deepen customer development among local rollformers, roofing factories and sandwichpanel manufacturers in emerging markets, providing JIS, ASTM certified customized thingauge, hightensile material to capture incremental infrastructure demand. Second, accelerate highvalueadded transformation, lifting export proportion of HDP / PVDF highweatherresistance PPGL, photovoltaicgrade colourcoated steel to offset tariff pressure and improve overall profit margin. Meanwhile, strengthened export quality supervision will further push manufacturers away from lowend homogeneous competition.
